Early the next morning, Laura crumpled up a well-used tissue and let it fall from her hand and land on the floor as she reached for a fresh Kleenex. It was a wonder she had any tears left. Laura had no idea how long she’d been there, curled in a ball, staring out the window, the moisture on her cheeks permanent, strands of her hair matted into her tears.

She had lost track of all time—until her cell phone ringing brought her to the present. It sounded so distant. Where had she left it?

Laura followed the sound—down the hallway and into the kitchen. The phone lay next to the computer—right where she left it. Martin. He was the only one who might call at this hour. Why couldn’t he just leave her alone?

She debated not answering it. What if it was an emergency? All of her adoptive families had the number, what if one of them was in crisis? Laura knew the chances it was anyone but Martin were slim, but she couldn’t risk it. In the end, Laura begrudgingly went in the direction of the noise.

“What,” she answered in an irritated tone without looking at the display.

“Hello, may I please…speak…to,” the caller stammered. “Mrs. Laura Hart?”

“This is Laura Hart. Who is this?” Laura’s heart jumped in her chest and began to pound. This call was official. It was an emergency. Thank God she’d answered!

“This is Jonathan with the VISA fraud department.”

VISA fraud department? What was this all about?

Then it hit her.

Oh dear lord, Laura thought it couldn’t get worse but her husband’s hotel stay must have raised a red flag in the computer system. They lived locally so why would they get a hotel room? Would she have to explain? This was humiliating.

Laura suddenly wondered how Martin had gotten away with having an affair right under her nose.

Had he paid for rooms in cash? Had the blonde paid? No. Martin was too much of a gentleman to let a woman pay—even if it was for a nefarious reason.

“Ma’am, there has been a series of unusual activity on your account this evening,” Jonathan explained cutting into her thoughts, “and we need to verify that these charges are valid.”

“Do you really do this sort of thing in the middle of the night?”

“If the cardholder answers the phone.”

“Can’t we do this in the morning?” Laura asked, frustrated. “Or call my husband? He’s the one…with the charges.”

“Certainly, we could freeze the account and you could call us back in the morning. Or your husband could call,” Jonathan responded. “But if someone has stolen your card, don’t you want to know and take action? The sooner we get this resolved, the better chance we have of catching the person responsible.”

She thought of Martin, sleeping somewhere in a hotel—possibly with a companion—clueless to the fact that tomorrow morning he would be humiliated when he was told his credit card was denied. Laura considered it for a moment…a long moment.

“Ma’am?”

“Fine,” Laura conceded. “Let’s do this now.”
